That’s right! The County-wide 4-H Environmental Science project has started. Do you like to go fishing? Are you interested in animals and fish? Would you like to meet new friends? Have you ever wondered about Fish Conservation practices? 4-H is the lucky recipient of a tank of salmon eggs. We will raise the fry (baby fish) to “release size” under the guidance of the Essex County Fish Hatchery and Trout Unlimited. 4-H will be working closely with 4-H leader, Tiffany Pinheiro, who is a fisheries and wildlife biologist. If you are interested in a career in Wildlife, Conservation, Biology, or Environmental Science then this is your kind of project! Join the adventure and make new friends as we take a closer look at what it takes to become a Fish and Wildlife Conservationist. All 4-H members are invited and encouraged to take part. Come learn more about raising salmon for release into Adirondack waters. All ages, free program, Contact Linda for more information or to RSVP as a project member. Project notebooks are eligible to become a 4-H fair exhibit.  PLEASE NOTE THAT NOT ALL MEETINGS TAKE PLACE AT THE 4-H BUILDING.

Feb 6 at 6 pm at the 4-H building – Introduction to the lifecycle of salmon and the history of salmon in the Adirondacks. And don’t forget to take a peek at the fry in our 4-H aquarium.

April 7 at 9:30 am Take part in stocking salmon in the Westport Reservoir under the guidance of Tiffany Pinheiro, Essex County Fish Hatchery Technician. Many hands make light work!

May 8 at 6 pm Take a closer look behind the scenes with a private tour of the Essex County Fish Hatchery located in Crown Point. As our final project piece, we will release salmon into Putnam Creek. Then we will celebrate with a “grill & chill” picnic at the hatchery. Please note that most of the project takes place outside. Dress for the weather - you may get wet so pack extra shoes or warm clothes. For more information, call Linda.
