Hello! My name is Shane Foye. I am volunteering in Essex County, as an AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America), with the Agriculture and the Farm to School programs. During my time as a volunteer, I hope to expand the county’s banker plant project, demonstrate on-farm beneficial nematode applications, and share my interest in insects with the community.
The AmeriCorps VISTA program allows me to apply scientific and teaching skills that I developed while attending graduate school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. While in Madison, I studied native nematodes that naturally controlled cranberry insect pests. Tutoring the football players in the subject of entomology taught me that sharing knowledge can be both fun and rewarding; students from outside the entomology department ask different and interesting questions! While serving as a VISTA, I hope to continue the practice of reaching out to new students.
